In the early 1950's, Victor Hermelin, KV's founder and current chairman of the board, obtained patents for early extended-release and enteric-coated drug delivery technologies. In 1972, KV acquired the predecessor to Particle Dynamics, Inc. and transformed its business with technology to create new, specialty raw material product lines for the pharmaceutical, nutritional, and personal-care industries. And, as KV began to enhance its platform of drug delivery technologies and materials, the company began to shift strategy — moving away from contract manufacturing toward developing and marketing its own products.
