Solar Product Test Engineer - Photovoltaics

The Product Test Engineer (PTE) conducts outdoor testing of modules made by Sharp and competitors and tests related Balance of System components, including products intended to increase kWh production. Testing includes data acquisition, analysis of data, and comparison of actual data with simulated performance. Testing also includes evaluation of product prototypes and derivatives. The PTE will occasionally also support field investigations with the Service Group. A significant portion of the work will be focused on thin film modules. The PTE serves as the implementation leader for a multi-site testing program for new products, including crystalline and thin film modules. The PTE is responsible for testing products, short term and long term, and providing detailed reports about product performance and differences among products. The PTE understands instrumentation and data acquisition. The PTE will work with existing infrastructure and develop requests for new infrastructure as appropriate.

Job Requirements:
Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Minimum of 2 years related experience.
Experience with PV, codes and standards, data acquisition/monitoring.
Some travel required.
Demonstrated record of self-motivated approach and being able to work in a team environment that is fast paced.
Computer competencies: Office, Project, VISIO, LabView (or similar).
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills including group presentations.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively manage multiple projects.

Job Responsibilities:
Understand relevant standards for testing and how to apply them.
Understand “test to the standard” and “test to failure”; participate in post mortems and analysis of test results.
Primary focus on module performance and characterization, ranging from hot spot measurements, bypass diode characterization to NOCT and temperature coefficient measurements as well as performance under varying light levels, module-to-module mismatch.
Set up of items to be tested and test equipment; conduct and report on tests.
Work with Product Managers to set up tests at third party locations, including NRTLs, university labs and customer sites.
Contribute to the establishment of the Huntington Beach outdoor test capability.
Publish Tech Bulletins and test reports as appropriate; hold briefing with Sharp staff to discuss results.
Study LID and LTD to set a baseline for Sharp products.
Test third-party electronics that are intended to improve system performance, including module-level inverters and max power trackers..
