Per Diem Pharmacy Technician

Job DutiesUnder direction of the Staff Pharmacist and the practice area supervisor, assist the pharmacist(s) in all non-dispensing activities required for completing patients' prescription orders for patients and clinics. Major duties include intake, CRT, setting-up, telephone and maintenance.

Job Qualifications1. Ability to speak with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds to obtain information and explain procedures.

2. Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly using correct English to communicate with telephone callers to obtain information, provide information and explain procedures.

3. Knowledge of decimal, fractions, percentages, metric and apothecary system units to be able to read prescriptions, convert units when necessary and measure products.

4. Typing skill to prepare prescription labels with speed and accuracy.

5. Skill in operating and maintaining Baker cell counters and cassettes.

6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow technicians, pharmacists, volunteers and individuals in other work areas, (e.g., IVAS, CIDA, inpatient).

7. Skill in interacting diplomatically with the public in a high volume, continuous public contact setting.

8. Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, frustration or hostility from patients or co-workers.

9. Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one to another of a different nature.

10. Skill in performing repetitive work according to set procedures and sequence.

11. Skill in performing under the stress of frequent interruptions and/or distractions.

12. Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.

13. Ability to stand at least 70% of work time, and sit at least 30% of work time.

14. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds short distance, (i.e., within the pharmacy), when retrieving or replacing stock items.

15. Working knowledge of pharmacy terminology including trade and generic drug names and standard abbreviations for directions for use for the purpose of interpreting prescriptions when typing labels.

16. Skill in operating data-entry keyboard for data entry and retrieval on pharmacy computer system, as well as, label printers and laser printers.

17. Skill in operating and cleaning Kirby-Lester counting machine.

18. Working knowledge of University billing codes, their restrictions and application to individual patient and clinic orders.

19. Ability to accurately select correct product needed to complete an order including product, strength, quantity and manufacturer.

20. Ability to accurately count units of product needed to complete an order.

21. Skill in using practice area equipment including calculators, space-saving shelving, dumbwaiter, NDC claims modem, and Meridian Phones.
