Hospital Lab Assistant II (Per Diem)

Job DutiesProvide administrative, technical, and maintenance support to the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine under general supervision of department supervisors, technical supervisor, department Manager and/or designated other responsible technical personnel. The HLA II performs pre-analytical and post-analytical activities including but not limited to answering phones to respond to questions within scope of knowledge, accessioning and processing of primary specimens, transporting specimens from draw station to clin lab, operating, cleaning and maintaining work area and laboratory equipment, troubleshooting specimen/test order problems, filing, and participating in special studies as required by laboratory management and medical staff. Ensure all work is performed properly and in a timely manner. Other duties may include monitoring inventories of supplies and reagents used in diagnostic testing, quality control/quality assurance support, computer operation (report printing) and data entry and retrieval. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts. Ability to be reassigned to areas as needed and on a daily basis, assess overall workload for any area that needs help, and help co-workers without being reassigned by the supervisor. Ability to speak clearly and distinctly using correct English to answer telephones and communicate with departmental and hospital personnel.

Job QualificationsWorking knowledge of all laboratory safety protocols necessary in working in a laboratory environment to include work with chemicals, equipment (mechanical and electrical), biological samples, radioactive materials (where applicable), etc. Knowledge of different specimen types and specimen sites. Ability to recognize when an instrument, procedure, or piece of equipment is not functioning properly or when there is a problem situation, and taking appropriate action. Skill in maintaining files/records, such as reagent preparation, quality control, and instrument maintenance records, etc. Skill in performing related computer procedures. Ability to maintain awareness of laboratory supplies and/or reagent needs. Ability to maintain a clean, organized work area. Ability to promote and use interpersonal skills to provide excellent customer service. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with personnel in the section, laboratory, and ancillary medical areas. Ability to organize workflow to meet the expected turnaround time for assigned laboratory tasks. Ability to recognize limitations of position and to ask for assistance as appropriate. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal supervision. Ability to proactively assess workload and help co-workers. Skill in performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Skill in performing under conditions of frequent interruptions, distractions, and heavy workload while maintaining equanimity, accuracy, and productivity. Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload, often changing from one task to another on an hourly or daily basis. Skill in adapting to unusual circumstances and changing priorities. Ability to respond positively and cooperatively to temporary changes in work schedule. Ability to work flexible hours, with little notice (i.e. stay late). Ability to lift 50 pounds.
