VCU Health System's Pediatrics EKG is seeking a full time Sonographer. The practice of ultrasonography is performed by an ultrasound technologist responsible for the administration of high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for medical purposes. A sonographer performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Ultrasonography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information. A sonographer recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure. Sonographers must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Sonographers recognize patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure and exercised independent professional and ethical judgment. Sonographers are the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners and other members of the support team. Sonographers must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills. Participation in quality improvement processes and continuous assessment of performance is expected. Sonographers think critically and use independent, professional, and ethical judgment in all aspects of work. Engagement in continuing education to enhance patient care, public education, knowledge, and technical competence is expected in this role.
***The Sonographer selected for this position will perform superior quality echocardiograms on all age patients with an emphasis on Pediatric Cardiology and pediatric patients
Responsibilities:
Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedure or examination upon the order of, or for diagnostic interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner (LIP).Determines ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest. Assists the LIP with interventional procedures such as needle localizations, aspirations, biopsies, drainages, etc.Maintains records, respecting confidentiality and established policyApplies the principles of patient safety during all aspects of procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.Assumes responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures.Applies principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.Performs venipuncture per procedural protocol based on imaging order from a licensed independent practitioner.Identifies, prepares, and /or administers medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a LIP.Evaluates images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.Provides patient education.Educates, mentors, and provides general oversight of students and other learners in the Radiology environment.Participates in and/or performs ongoing quality assurance activities.Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific manager or supervisor. Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing needs of the health system. Weekend and other after hours coverage may be required based on workload demand and staffing needs of the health system. Sonographer/Technologists are considered "Essential Employees" who may be required to report to work in accordance with the VCUHS Policy.
Qualifications
Required
Graduation from an CAAHEP or CMA Accredited Program in medical/cardiac/vascular sonography or Graduation from a minimum of a 2 year JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology or Sonography that is recognized by the ARRT or Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, JRC-DMS or graduation from a Bachelor's degree program in sonography or vascular sonography.
Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) as a sonographer ARRT(S) or RDMS certification in medical sonography or RDCS or CCI certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as Vascular Technologist.
For new graduates of qualifying educational program: Must reach eligibility status for certification test within 12 months of hire date and must pass certification exam within 6 months of reaching eligibility status.
Preferred
Bachelor's Degree in a radiologic technology, sonography, or vascular sonography.One (1) year of previous work experience as a Sonographer/TechnologistPrevious work experience in an academic medical center environment
Cardiology experience preferred
