Position Summary:

· Advocates for the patient by identifying potential financial assistance options, helping patients through the application process, and coordinating with outside resources to secure payment for medical care. Thoughtfully assists self pay patients in developing manageable payment plans.

Required Qualifications:

· High school diploma or equivalent
· Understanding of collection laws (i.e. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and collection techniques
· Keyboard skills, typing of 35 wpm, accuracy implied
· Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment (copy machines, scanners, fax machines, etc)
· Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
· Good analytical skills and problem solving capabilities
· Ability to interview and request payment, if appropriate, from patients who are ill and/or under stress
· Ability to work effectively with team members, patients, and families of varying personalities and cultures
· Flexibility in schedule to accommodate the needs of the patients and the department

Preferred Qualifications:

· Some post high school education
· Prior experience in working in registration, financial counseling, or a related healthcare field
· Knowledge of medical terminology
· Ability to communicate effectively in a second language such as Navajo or Spanish
Duties and Responsibilities:

· Identify in-house patients who may be eligible for financial assistance through Medicaid, county indigent program, or hospital's charity care program. Interview patients and family members to obtain information that will help determine eligibility.
· Assess, resolve, and/or refer problems to the appropriate person or department, when necessary.
· Assist patients in applying for financial assistance and/or initiate referrals to appropriate party (e.g. County Indigent Coordinator) for further follow up if necessary.
· Determine approximate charges for self-pay patients and coordinate the collection of fees and/or establishment of payment plans.
· Document appropriate information in the system to ensure information flows accurately to the business office to facilitate the claim process and support payment.
· Provide excellent customer service by treating patients, family members, and visitors with utmost respect and appropriately responding to any inquiries they have.
· Attend monthly department meetings, in-service training, and other meetings as required to maintain professional growth and/or comply with hospital policy.
· Maintain all department logs, reports, and records.
· Each employee is responsible for implementing SJRMC's Service Standards into their daily work.

Physical Demands, Environmental Work Conditions, and Sensory Requirements:

· Must be able to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time.
· Ability to withstand frequent exposure to ill patients.
· Ability to handle pressure due to situations with patients or families in regard to lack of coverage and request for payment.
· Vision and hearing acuity within normal range.

San Juan Regional Medical Center is a 240 bed acute care hospital with a level III trauma center located in Farmington, New Mexico. In August 2006, an $83 million expansion was completed which added 72 new private patient rooms, most with fresh air balconies. The expansion also added 8 new operating suites, all with ceiling-mounted boom technology, a new public cafe, a healing garden, a well equipped staff/physician exercise room, and a new Central Sterile Processing facility. The older part of the facility is undergoing renovation, with all patient rooms being converted to private. Much of the renovation is completed, including the new staff-only cafe, and a spacious Cardiac and Pulmonary Gym.
